Developing cultural competence within organizations is not limited to the field of healthcare, yet many article reviews and studies focus on this segment of the workforce. It essential for all labor forces throughout the globe to begin adopting a culture that appreciates the differences of all individuals and their beliefs and systems. The delivery of any services can be impacted by a lack of knowledge on social and cultural determinants. It is necessary to understand that each person’s unique cultural influences their values, perspectives, beliefs, and behaviors (Betancourt et al., 2021). The practices currently being used in the different healthcare settings can be used to develop individualized approaches that are appropriate to the nonhealthcare workforce settings. An article review centered around rehabilitation services in healthcare (occupational therapy, speech language pathology, physiotherapy, & audiology) found three major categories to help facilitate services to minority groups. The authors found that increasing cultural awareness, fostering a culturally competent work environment, and explaining the work being done (in their situation, explaining healthcare) were necessary components in developing cultural competence (Grandpierre et al., 2018). Increasing cultural awareness in settings outside of healthcare can be fostered by encouraging people to share their rich family history and traditions with one another to better understand differences in actions or beliefs that may be noted amongst employees. Helping to identify personal discrimination or bias can be taught in any workforce setting. Promotion of meaningful relationships with co-workers and engagement in cross-cultural encounters can also help to foster growth and acceptance (Grandpierre et al., 2018). The U.S. labor force push for equality of minorities has made it much more common to see culturally diverse workforces. Regardless of these small pushes, awareness must continue to be spread, but not be forced. In the healthcare setting, interventions have been focused on education and training to effectively respond to sociocultural issues that may arise in a clinical encounter (Jongen et al., 2018). This may not be as appropriate for other workforces to adapt, but instead can be modified to help with communicating with individuals of different cultural backgrounds to help not only support the business in question, but also to support their valuable customers. Jongen et al (2018) identified that categorically approaches to cultural competence have not been widely effective and likely would not be appropriate in a setting outside of healthcare. Instead, businesses can welcomely celebrate different cultural holidays and beliefs within their workforce to make everyone feel they matter, and their different beliefs don’t separate them for the team. Every company must also promote an equal and fair product delivery to every customer, despite bias, and that these actions of bias will not be welcomed in their organizations. Encouragement of acceptance and respect of differences is the responsibility of all members of society but will need time to grow and develop. In the World today, many hope to gain cultural equality for all, but not all promote this idea in a healthy or helpful manner. Individuals to not respond well to force or bullying. It is absolutely imperative to understand this and be sure to welcome differences and individuality that does not suggest change in one’s cultural beliefs to fit the agenda of another. Equality comes with understanding individuals do not have to be the same to work together and get along, they just must respect one another.
