Signs of compassion fatigue can also show up through mood swings, anxiety, depression, trouble being productive, insomnia, exhaustion or even changes in one’s appetite.

#1…..People who work in a professional setting and have to deal with people’s trauma day in and day out could start feeling extreme tiredness and desperation. The signs that can indicate that you or someone you know or work with might be developing compassion fatigue is the inability to work or complete daily activities. Signs of compassion fatigue can also show up through mood swings, anxiety, depression, trouble being productive, insomnia, exhaustion or even changes in one’s appetite. (Signs and Symptoms of Compassion Fatigue, 2022) Often times professionals have heavy workloads with excessive demands and long work hours which causes them to stress out triggering compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue can occur when being physically or verbally threatened by a client while providing care for them. Visiting an accident scene, observing graphic evidence, or dealing with evidence or reports of trauma is a major cause of compassion fatigue. It can also happen when an individual provides care to someone who deals with depression, death, grief, or mourning. Additionally, suicide or threats of suicide by someone under your care can also be stressful and cause an individual to have compassion fatigue. (Compassion Fatigue, Symptoms to look for, 2005) Overall, you should talk out your stress and process your thoughts with a coworker, therapist, clergy, friend, family member or manager. It is important to build a positive support system and embrace self-care. #2…..Before doing any research on compassion fatigue, I have a little personal experience with this. My husband was shot the beginning of 2020 and became paralyzed neck down. In that area we did not have many resources and support for spinal cord injuries so we had to learn and grow on our own. I became his full-time caregiver and have been since then. I experienced many symptoms of compassion fatigue like anxiety, feeling overwhelmed and lost sometimes with who I was and what I was doing. I would be so tired, and drained and get headaches all the time. I still have some of these symptoms but we have adapted and learned how to use self-care and coping skills. I will go for walks every day and sometimes he will go for a roll with me. This sounds crazy but since I work from home I like to leave every morning and get coffee. It was something I did before his injury on the way to work. It is so important to notice signs of compassion fatigue and know how to address them.
